About Me

I'm a freelance writer living in Washington, D.C. I've moved around quite a bit over the last several years -- Chicago, San Francisco, Chicago again, Boston, and now D.C. But the museums here are killer, so I may actually stay for a while.
I grew up in a very, very small town in central Illinois. You have not heard of it, so do not bother asking its name.
"Teej" is a childhood nickname that resulted from the combination of my first and middle initials. I blog anonymously because I like to keep my personal and work lives somewhat separate. Plus, I do a fair amount of journalism, and blogging about my freakishly long fingers does little to bolster my journalistic credibility. I don't particularly mind if you stumble on my blog and somehow find out my name, but I do not want people to Google my name and find this blog.
In June 2007, I married The Mouse. He is:
- A practical joker
- Ridiculously handsome (ED NOTE: SOURCE IS BIASED BUT CORRECT)
- Excellent at math and science and things that make my brain sputter and stall
- Incapable of returning the toilet seat to its woman-friendly position
- Generous and loyal
- A kid magnet
I openly admit to retaining my Giant Crush on Jeff Corwin, but The Mouse openly admits to retaining his Giant Crush on Mandy Moore (which I suspect was intensified by Mandy's attendance at a late-2007 Ultimate Fighting event). Thus, we have reached an understanding.
I read. A lot. My favorite book is almost certainly "Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry, although I am sometimes vexed by the way McMurtry writes about women. I love almost everything by Kurt Vonnegut. I think I like "The World According to Garp" more than I like "A Prayer For Owen Meany" simply because "Garp" is funnier. And if you can't occasionally laugh at the sadness of the world, you'll just add to it.
I am open about my atheism not because I am trying to convert you, but because I want you to see that "atheist" is not synonymous with any of the following nouns or adjectives:
- unethical
- mean
- angry
- cynical
- asshole
- selfish
- baby killer
- puppy abuser
- Satan
I believe that we get one shot at life, and we better make it good for ourselves and for others -- not to mention for those who have yet to arrive. And whatever you are -- Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, atheist, humanist, therapist, colorist, receptionist, contortionist, clarinetist, balloonist or quarterfinalist -- I bet that we, as humans, have far more in common than we have in contrast. So let's be nice to each other, eh?
